What was, and What continues to be.

'What was, and What continues to be' is a meditation on notions of monuments, legacy and the end of us all. In a thousand years, what would be left of us? From stone and concrete, we create monuments meant to last and to stand the test of time. Much like how tombstones are a testaments to one's life, beginning to end, are these structures a monument to our actions as a whole?

I was inspired by Roland Barthe's seminal piece, Camera Lucida, for the composition of this piece. That in photos, he saw death and that the very essence of photography is 'that has been'. The subjects of this piece are decrepit and are a shadow of what they once were. But in their age, they are serene and quiet. Their bones, beautiful.
